We’ve rearranged things in our house and as a result, my son now has a “book nook.” He loves to sit in there and pull out all of the books and “read” them. Sometimes I think we could read to him all day long and he wouldn’t mind. It’s a little hard to say no to reading, but it is one activity that does not make him tired and it’s always my goal to wear that child out so he’ll take a nap. Freezing weather and ice have given us a little cabin fever. Anyway, I just wanted to share a couple of books that we are into right now. It’s so hard to believe how many great children’s books there are out there. True there are some that make you feel like you, too, could become a children’s author. There are still others that are a little humbling, because they are wonderful and they make me realize that no, I probably couldn’t write a good children’s book.
Eddie’s Kitchen and How to Make Good Things to Eat by Sarah Garland has become an instant favorite at our house. Eddie’s Mom needs to cook for a party, but she doesn’t have time, so Eddie and his carrot-loving, fairy princess little sister Lily help out. The book comes complete with recipes. We actually made the bread recipe this morning. It was the best bread I’ve ever made and it was extremely easy. If only I could keep my son from eating the uncooked ingredients. The thought of him eating uncooked yeast was horrifying. But the bread came out great.
In the Town All Year Round by Rotraut Susanne Berner is great for children who like the Richard Scarry books with lots of detail. There are five or so scenes from a town that are repeated for each of the seasons. It’s mostly wordless and the fun part is to talk about all the different things on each page. This is originally a German book I think. It has a very European feel which is nice.
Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Bake You A Pie by Robbin Gourley is about Edna Lewis, one of the first African-American, woman chefs. Edna Lewis loved fresh, in-season ingredients and this book follows a childhood Edna through a growing season on her family’s farm. It’s a great look at where food comes from. A brief biography and recipes appear at the end of the book.
