Back at MidWinter, I went to a great presentation by the Library Marketing folks over at HarperCollins. They were really playing up this book and I couldn’t wait to read it. And I have been reading it for quite a while now. But, with my obligation reading, I kept having to set it aside. With nothing pressing for a few weeks, I picked it back up and I’m almost finished. Hopefully, tonight. It’s fantastic.
Mary was barefoot. She wore a sundress stained by blackberry juice and a gardening belt made from a potato sack. Rachel had made it for her. “How many dead?” she hollered to Mrs. Wells.
“Twenty-three. Two more than yesterday.”
Mary tossed the last of her pepper.
